Trinidad is the wedding venue most North Coast couples gravitate toward, not by accident. The bluffs above Trinidad Bay deliver a backdrop nothing else in California quite matches: cliffs falling into surf, sea stacks scattered north toward Patrick’s Point, redwoods rising behind the headlands. Cinematic at any hour.
Here’s what I tell couples planning a Trinidad wedding when they reach out to Tex Kelly Productions.
The fog is real, and it’s a feature
Coastal Humboldt fog rolls in most mornings between June and September. It usually lifts by mid-morning and breaks again in the late afternoon. The trick isn’t avoiding fog, it’s planning around it. A 2pm ceremony is gambling. A 4 or 5pm ceremony hits the golden window after the burn-off and before the sun drops behind the headland.
For couples who want sun, schedule for September or October. For couples who love moody, dramatic, painted-by-clouds skies, the foggy mornings are a gift.
Where to actually stand
A few specific Trinidad wedding spots that work consistently:
- Trinidad Head trail, the saddle just below the cross has the strongest north-facing view. Small ceremony groups (10–25) can fit there comfortably without permits.
- College Cove, accessible via the Tepona Point trail. South-facing, more sheltered from wind, dramatic cliff backdrop.
- Trinidad State Beach, the best 100-person ceremony location. Permit required through Cal Parks. Apply 60 days out.
- Private estates north of Trinidad Head, the easy answer for full-control shoots. Several work consistently with photographers, happy to share.
What I shoot it with
Full photo and film coverage delivered together. DJI Mavic 3 Pro for the inevitable aerial pull-back at the kiss. A second photographer handles candid coverage while I’m on the ceremony angles. Drone work requires FAA Part 107 (which I am) and clearance for nearby airspace. Trinidad is unrestricted Class G, so we fly without LAANC delays.
If you’re planning a Trinidad wedding, send a note, happy to talk through the bluff vs cove decision and what your light window looks like for your date.
