Tex Kelly, senior portraits for Point Arena, California

Hi. I'm Tex.

Welcome to senior season, Point Arena edition.

I'm a North Coast filmmaker and photographer, voted Humboldt County's Best. Senior portraits in Point Arena are some of my favorite sessions of the year, your hometown deserves a senior shoot that actually looks like Point Arena, not a generic studio backdrop you could be anywhere.

My job is to make you (or your senior) feel completely comfortable, then put you in front of the most cinematic light Point Arena and the surrounding Mendocino County have to offer. No stiff poses. No fake smiles. Just real, beautiful, intentional portraits worth printing big.

A note from Point Arena

Senior portrait sessions in Point Arena, California, the Point Arena Lighthouse, Stornetta Public Lands, Schooner Gulch, and the most isolated and dramatic stretch of Mendocino coastline.

The Approach

Senior portraits in Point Arena. Made for this place.

The Point Arena location

Point Arena backdrops, picked on purpose.

Point Arena senior portraits play against one of the most dramatic and underused stretches of the California coast, the Point Arena Lighthouse on its windswept point, the Stornetta Public Lands' sea cliffs and tidepools, Schooner Gulch's sandstone formations, and a Pacific shoreline that photographs like the edge of the world. Point Arena High families and out-of-area seniors travel here specifically for the most isolated coastal senior portrait setting in California.

The Point Arena session

No stiff poses. No fake smiles.

A senior session here is built around walking and talking, not posing. We meet at the Point Arena Lighthouse, then work down toward the Stornetta Public Lands bluffs as the light moves. Bring two or three outfits. We change between the lighthouse point and the sea cliffs, and we cover the whole route ahead of time so nobody is standing around guessing. No stiff yearbook setups. You walk, you look out at the water, the camera keeps up.

The Mendocino County scouting advantage

Built for Point Arena. Scouted for years.

Knowing this coast saves the session. Bowling Ball Beach at Schooner Gulch only gives up its concretion-ball geology at low tide, so we read the tide chart before we book the hour. Wind off the westernmost point of mainland California is constant, which helps hair and fabric move instead of sit flat. Point Arena High seniors get the lighthouse and the Stornetta tidepools both. Spring fog burns off later here than it does inland.

The Editing Process

Months in the edit suite, curating the story.

A wedding film isn't shot in a day, it's made over months. Hours of raw cinema footage, multi-camera audio, drone aerial, and second-shooter coverage get assembled, color-graded, and scored frame by frame in the edit suite.

Every transition is intentional. Every cut earns its keep. The goal is a film couples actually want to re-watch, not a montage of clips. That kind of editorial discipline is the difference between a wedding film and a wedding highlight reel, and it's why these turnarounds run weeks instead of days.

Senior Portrait Photographer in Point Arena. FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

  • Can you incorporate the Point Arena Lighthouse in a senior portrait session?
Yes, lighthouse senior portrait sessions are the signature Point Arena option. Standard 60-minute sessions cover the lighthouse exterior + Stornetta sea cliffs in one visit; full-day editorials add Bowling Ball Beach at low tide.
  • How long is a senior portrait session?
Standard sessions run 60 minutes to 2 hours, including 1–3 location changes and 2–3 outfit changes. Longer 'epic' sessions (half-day) are available for seniors who want to capture multiple settings, a redwood look, a coastal look, and a hometown look, across one production day.
  • Where do you shoot senior portraits?
Anywhere on the North Coast that means something to you. Common locations include Sequoia Park, Trinidad State Beach, Patrick's Point, Founders Grove, Halvorsen Park, downtown Eureka, the Avenue of the Giants, and the Lost Coast. Indoor sessions are available at our Eureka studio.
  • When should we schedule?
Senior portrait season peaks late summer through early fall (golden hour + fall colors). For best variety, schedule 6–10 weeks before yearbook deadlines. Spring senior sessions for class-of-following-year are also a popular alternative for less crowded locations.
  • What should the senior bring?
2–3 outfits (more for longer sessions), any meaningful props or items (instrument, jersey, pet, vehicle), and snacks/water. Tex sends a full prep guide once we book, including outfit suggestions, location-specific notes, and a timeline for the session day.
  • How long until we get the gallery?
Edited galleries are delivered in 2–3 weeks for standard sessions. Print orders and yearbook-ready files can be expedited if there's a deadline, let Tex know up front.
