Some wedding photographers quote an hourly rate. Others, like me, price the whole wedding as a flat collection. Both can be fair, but they behave very differently on your wedding day, and knowing which you’re signing up for matters.
How each one works
Hourly. You pay a rate per hour of coverage, and editing or extras may be billed on top. It can look cheaper up front because the number is small.
Flat collection. One price covers the whole package: the coverage, the editing, the gallery, and whatever else is included. You know the full cost before the day.
Where hourly can bite you
Hourly sounds flexible, but on a wedding day it can turn into a meter running in your head. The ceremony starts late, the toasts go long, and now you’re doing math about whether to pay for another hour or cut the photographer before the send-off. Plus the small hourly number often doesn’t include the editing, so the real total lands higher than it first looked. Weddings don’t run on a clock, and pricing that does can pressure the day.
Why most experienced photographers go flat
Once a photographer has shot enough weddings, they know a wedding isn’t an hourly job. It’s getting-ready through the reception, plus the long editing after. A flat collection prices the whole thing, so:
- You know the full cost up front, with no surprise add-ons
- Nobody’s watching a clock when the timeline slips
- Editing and deliverables are already in the number
That’s why my weddings are flat collections, Essential, Signature, and Heirloom, each with set coverage and everything included. You can see them on the pricing page.
Which is right for you
Hourly can make sense for something small and tightly-timed, like a courthouse ceremony where you want one hour and nothing else. For a full wedding, a flat collection almost always serves you better, because the day won’t keep to an hour count and you don’t want to find that out mid-reception.
