Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer Before You Book

Most couples ask a photographer about price and availability, book, and hope for the best. The questions that actually tell you whether someone is the real deal are different. Here’s the short list worth asking anyone before you sign.

The questions that matter

  1. Can I see a full wedding gallery, start to finish? A highlight reel of someone’s ten best shots tells you nothing. Ask to see an entire wedding so you know they’re consistent all day, not just lucky a few times.
  2. Do you bring a second shooter? For a full wedding, one camera can’t be everywhere. Know whether a second photographer is included or extra.
  3. What gear do you bring, and what’s your backup? A professional shoots with backup bodies and backs up your photos in more than one place. If a camera or card fails, your wedding shouldn’t disappear with it.
  4. Is there a written contract? There should always be one, spelling out coverage, deliverables, and what happens if something goes wrong.
  5. How and when do I get my photos? Ask about the gallery, how many images, whether they’re fully edited, and the delivery timeline.
  6. Do you carry insurance? Many venues require proof of it. A pro can provide a certificate.
  7. Have you shot at my venue, or in conditions like mine? A Sedona red rock wedding and a Flagstaff pine ceremony light completely differently. Local experience shows.

Why I tell couples to ask these

I’d rather you book the right photographer, even if it isn’t me, than get burned. So here’s where I stand on the list above: every one of my weddings is shot by me, with professional backup gear and galleries backed up in multiple places. The Signature and Heirloom collections include a second shooter. Everything is in writing before any money changes hands. And I’m local to Yavapai County, so I’ve shot the light up here in every season.

Ask, then trust your read

Good answers to these questions, plus a full gallery you actually like, plus a photographer you click with, is most of the decision. If you want to ask me any of them directly, reach out. You can also see what’s included in each collection or the full pricing.
