Wedding Photography Contracts: What to Look For Before You Sign

A wedding photography contract isn’t there to trap you. A good one protects you. It’s the document that says exactly what you’re getting, what it costs, and what happens if something goes sideways. Here’s what a solid one should cover.

What a good contract spells out

Coverage and date. The wedding date, the hours, and the start and end times. No ambiguity about how long the photographer is there.

What you’re getting. The deliverables in plain terms: the gallery, roughly how many edited images, the print release, and any album, engagement session, or film included.

The delivery timeline. When you’ll get your photos, and in what form. This should be a real timeframe, not “eventually.”

Payment terms. The total, the retainer to book, and when the balance is due. Everything should be written down, never a handshake.

Cancellation and rescheduling. What happens if you postpone, and what’s refundable if you cancel. Weddings move; the contract should account for it.

The backup clause. This is the one couples skip and later wish they hadn’t. What happens if the photographer is sick or has an emergency on your wedding day? A professional has a plan for a replacement and puts it in writing.

Image rights and print release. Confirm you can print and share your own photos. You should always get a print release.

How I handle it

Every wedding I shoot has a clear written agreement before any money changes hands, with the coverage, deliverables, timeline, and terms all spelled out. You should never feel like you’re guessing about what you booked.

If you’re reviewing a contract from any photographer and something’s missing from the list above, ask about it before you sign. And if you want to see how mine reads, reach out. It pairs well with the red flags to watch for.
