How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Actually Need?

Most weddings need at least 8 hours of photography coverage, and many want a full day. The right number for you depends on your timeline, so here’s how to figure it out instead of guessing.

What the hours actually cover

Walk through a normal wedding day and you can see where the time goes:

  1. Getting ready. The details, the dress, the nerves, the moment with your people before it starts. Usually 1 to 2 hours.
  2. First look and portraits. Before or after the ceremony. About an hour.
  3. The ceremony. 30 minutes to an hour, depending.
  4. Family and wedding party photos. 30 to 45 minutes, and it always runs long.
  5. The reception. Entrances, toasts, first dance, the open floor. This is where a full day earns its keep.

Add that up and most weddings fill 8 hours before the dancing even gets going.

Eight hours versus a full day

My Essential collection is up to 8 hours, which covers getting ready through the first part of the reception. That’s plenty for a tighter timeline or a smaller wedding.

The Signature and Heirloom collections are full-day coverage. You’d want a full day if you have a longer gap between events, a getting-ready start that’s early, or a reception you want covered all the way to the last dance. The pricing page shows the difference.

How to figure out your hours

Sketch your timeline first: when getting-ready starts, when the ceremony is, and when you want the photographer to wrap. The span between the start and the wrap is your coverage. If it’s under 8 hours, Essential fits. If your day runs from an early morning into a late reception, go full day so nothing at the end gets cut.

A good rule: it’s better to have an hour you didn’t need than to lose the last dance because coverage ended. The end of the night is often where the best, loosest photos happen.
