What an AI Consultant Actually Does for a Small Business

“AI consultant” has turned into one of those titles that can mean almost anything, which usually means it means nothing. A lot of people selling AI consulting right now have never built a thing with it. They read the same articles you could read and charge you to repeat them back. So before you hire anyone, here’s what AI consulting should actually do for a small business, and what it should cost.

The job is to find the few things that pay off

Most of what you read about AI is noise. The real work is figuring out the two or three places AI actually helps your specific business and ignoring the rest. For a contractor in Prescott Valley that might be answering leads the second they come in. For a restaurant it might be ads that look like a bigger budget than you have. For an office it might be killing the repetitive paperwork that eats an afternoon every week.

A good AI consultant also tells you what not to bother with. That’s most of the value. Anyone trying to push AI into everything you do is selling, not advising.

Advice is cheap. Building is the part that matters

Here’s the line that separates the real ones from the rest: can they actually build the thing, or do they just hand you a plan and leave?

I built my own CRM and AI assistant from scratch. It’s called Paydirt, and I run my own business on it. When a lead comes in, it texts them back in seconds, follows up on its own, and keeps every conversation in one place so nothing slips. I didn’t read about that. I shipped it. So when I tell a client what AI can do for their lead follow-up, I’m not guessing, I’m showing them something already running. There’s a whole piece on why instant follow-up wins the job if that’s your bottleneck.

That’s what you want in an AI consultant. Someone who has done it, not someone who watched a webinar about it.

What the work actually looks like

When I take on AI consulting, it usually lands in a few buckets:

  • A lead and follow-up system, so every call and form gets answered instantly and nobody falls through.
  • Automation, taking the repetitive work that eats your week and handing it to software.
  • Custom tools, built for how your business actually runs when nothing off the shelf fits.
  • AI ads, commercials made with the newest AI video tools mixed with real footage, so a small budget swings above its weight.
  • Training, so your team can run the tools day to day instead of leaning on me forever.

You don’t take all of it. We start with the one that moves the needle and go from there.

What it costs

I keep this simple, and the same as my other marketing work. The first call is free. A strategy call where we find the real opportunities is $500 an hour. A written plan with the specific things to go after is $1,000. After that it’s either done-for-you, where I build and run it, or software-only, where you run it and keep me on call. Monthly pricing depends on the scope.

No “contact us for a quote” runaround. If the number’s a fit, we keep going. If it isn’t, no hard feelings.

How to spot the hype

A few quick tells that someone is selling AI hype instead of help:

  • They can’t show you a single thing they’ve actually built.
  • They want to put AI into everything instead of the few spots that matter.
  • The pricing is vague and the timeline is “it depends.”
  • Every other word is a buzzword and none of it is a result.

You’re a small business, not a science project. The right AI work should save you time or make you money, and you should be able to point at which.

If you run a business up here and you’ve wondered where AI could actually help without the hype, tell me what you’re working with and I’ll give you a straight read. Here’s the full pricing breakdown, a checklist for telling AI hype from real help, more on the AI consulting and advertising I do, and if the real bottleneck is marketing in general, what that costs.
